Devotions this Week - 02/01/2012

Out of Bounds

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
- Galatians 2:20

Oppression and hostility toward the gospel of peace helps me truly appreciate the freedom Jesus provides. It’s those that are seasoned at living in extreme persecution who learn to navigate the “spaces between the trees” with mastery. Those are the people I desire to emulate. Jesus experienced the extreme of all extremes by being scorn by the very religious leaders that were to uphold the glory of God.

Best Conditions for Seed Germination

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.
- 1 Corinthians 3:6

In order to reap a harvest, I must first plant the seed. It’s what happens underground during those first few weeks that are a magical, mystery. It takes the right conditions for a seed to grow. How do we provide the right conditions for God to germinate the heart of a person to receive Him?

Pouring Out

Even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.
- Philippians 2:17
I’m coming to learn, in order to be poured out, I first must be squeezed. It’s the squeezing that can and often does leave me, and maybe you too, resentful and bitter. Resentment is quite a sour experience to those who taste of it.

Flip the Switch

For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
-- Hebrews 4:12

In reading the book of Philippians everyday for a month, I noticed this week that Paul is not without emotion (Philippians 2:28). An emotion like anxiety is an indicator of a circumstance. It’s what Paul does with his emotion that is the key to flipping the switch to walk in the Spirit of God.
